BC Place Vancouver, Canada – Egypt delivered a commanding performance to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in Group G of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, with Mohamed Salah inspiring his side to a comfortable victory at BC Place Vancouver. The Pharaohs controlled the match from start to finish, showcasing their attacking quality and defensive organization to overcome a resilient All Whites side.

First Half: New Zealand’s Early Shock

The match began with Egypt asserting their authority through superior possession and movement. The African giants dominated the early exchanges, with Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet causing constant problems for the New Zealand defense with their pace and dribbling.

However, against the run of play, New Zealand stunned the stadium in the 15th minute when Finn Surman opened the scoring with a clinical finish. The goal came from a rare All Whites attack, with Surman latching onto a well-weighted through ball before calmly slotting past the Egyptian goalkeeper. The strike sent the New Zealand supporters into raptures and gave the underdogs a surprise lead.

Egypt responded positively to the setback, increasing their intensity and pressing higher up the pitch. The Pharaohs created several chances to equalize, with Mohamed Salah going close twice and Mostafa Zico forcing a fine save from the New Zealand goalkeeper. Despite their dominance, Egypt couldn’t find a way through before the halftime whistle, leaving the score at 1-0 to New Zealand at the break.

Second Half: Egyptian Dominance

Whatever Egypt manager Hossam Hassan said during the interval worked wonders. His team emerged with renewed purpose and intensity, immediately pinning New Zealand back in their own half.

The equalizer finally came in the 58th minute when Mostafa Zico headed home from a corner kick. The midfielder rose highest in a crowded penalty area to power his header past the stranded New Zealand goalkeeper, restoring parity and setting the stage for an Egyptian onslaught.

Nine minutes later, in the 67th minute, the inevitable happened. Mohamed Salah, Egypt’s talisman, produced a moment of individual brilliance to give his side the lead. The Liverpool superstar cut inside from the right flank, evaded two defenders with clever footwork, and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the far corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any match and showcased why Salah is considered one of the world’s best.

Egypt sealed the victory in the 82nd minute when Trezeguet added a third. The winger found himself unmarked at the back post to convert a cross from the right, completing a comprehensive second-half performance from the Pharaohs. (Source: fifa.com)

Post-Match Reactions

Egypt manager Hossam Hassan praised his team’s resilience after the match. “We showed great character to come back from a goal down,” he said. “New Zealand made it difficult for us in the first half, but our quality told in the end. Mohamed Salah was magnificent, as always.”

New Zealand manager Darren Bazeley remained positive despite the defeat. “We gave everything tonight,” he said. “To score first against a team of Egypt’s quality was a great achievement. But they wore us down in the second half, and we couldn’t cope with their attacking intensity.”

Group Implications

The victory puts Egypt in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages, with six points from their first two matches. New Zealand, meanwhile, will need to win their final group match and hope other results go their way to progress.

The Pharaohs’ second-half performance will send a warning to the rest of the tournament that they are serious contenders. With Mohamed Salah in inspired form and a solid supporting cast around him, Egypt will fancy their chances of making a deep run in the competition.
