Aguirre’s Return: A Familiar Face on the Sideline
Javier Aguirre is heading to his third World Cup as a coach, back in charge of a Mexico side he first led at Korea/Japan 2002 and then again at South Africa 2010. Nicknamed El Vasco, his objective is clear: to equal Mexico’s best-ever performance on home soil the quarterfinal runs of 1970 and 1986. With the nation cheering from every corner, Aguirre knows that anything less would be considered a disappointment. (Source: fifa.com)
Ochoa’s Historic Milestone

The squad is notable first and foremost for the inclusion of Ochoa, who will make history by participating in his sixth World Cup. At 40, the veteran shot-stopper remains a penalty-saving specialist and a commanding presence in the locker room. His experience will be vital as Mexico navigates the pressure of being co-hosts.
Chivas Contingent and Qatar 2022 Returnees
Also noteworthy is the inclusion of seven players from Chivas, the famous club that fields an all-Mexican squad a point of pride for those who value domestic development. Their presence adds cohesion and a distinct domestic flavor to the roster.
In total, 12 players who featured under Gerardo “Tata” Martino at Qatar 2022 will return. This blend of continuity and fresh blood gives Mexico a solid foundation while injecting the energy required to impress on the global stage.
Selección de México para el Mundial de 2026
With the home crowd behind them, Mexico will aim to channel the same spirit that fueled their deepest runs in 1970 and 1986. Aguirre’s squad has experience, youth, and a historic goalkeeper leading the way. Now, they must deliver when it matters most.
