However, there is no place for Dejan Kulusevski. The 26-year-old has not played since last May following knee surgery, with repeated setbacks derailing his recovery. Teenage sensation Roony Bardghji (Barcelona) and Celta Vigo’s Williot Swedberg have also been omitted. Sweden began their World Cup qualifying campaign under Jon Dahl Tomasson, but three defeats and a draw from four matches left them rooted to the bottom of Group B, prompting a change in the dugout. Potter who had famously led Swedish minnows Östersunds FK to European glory during the 2010s was chosen as his replacement.
The former Brighton and Chelsea manager could only muster one point from his two qualifiers, leaving Sweden still bottom of the group. However, courtesy of finishing top of their UEFA Nations League section, the Blågult earned a spot in the UEFA play-offs. A Viktor Gyökeres hat-trick saw them down Ukraine in the semi-final, before the Arsenal striker again provided the decisive goal in a five-goal thriller as Sweden edged past Poland to secure their 13th appearance at the global finals.
