MADRID, May 11 — In a tense La Liga Round 35 encounter at the Estadio de Vallecas, Rayo Vallecano and Girona played out a 1-1 draw, with veteran striker Cristhian Stuani cancelling out an 86th-minute opener from Alemao deep into stoppage time. The result leaves both sides with a share of the spoils in a match that was dominated by the hosts in terms of possession but defined by late drama and clinical finishing from the visitors.

First Half: Vallecano Dominate but Lack a Cutting Edge

Rayo Vallecano controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, enjoying a staggering 61% possession in the first half. Fran García and Isi Palazón were constant threats down the flanks, while Unai López dictated play from the middle of the park. The home side created 10 chances over the course of the match, many of which came before the break.

However, Girona’s defensive shape, marshalled by their center-backs, held firm. Despite Rayo firing in 6 shots on target across the full 90 minutes (compared to Girona’s 2), they could not find a way past Girona’s goalkeeper, who made 2 saves in the first half alone. The visitors, content to sit back with only 39% possession, offered little going forward before the interval, registering zero offsides and only a handful of passes into the final third.

The first half ended 0-0, with Rayo’s 9 corners to Girona’s 5 telling the story of territorial advantage without reward. You can get more La Liga league news, live scores, and match highlights at footballscore.

Second Half: Late Fireworks and a Stuani Special

As the second half wore on, it looked as though Rayo’s persistence would pay off. With four minutes remaining in regular time, the deadlock was finally broken. Alemao rose highest in the box to meet a pinpoint cross, slotting home to send the home fans into a frenzy. At 1-0 with just minutes left, Vallecano seemed destined for all three points.

But Girona, as they have done all season, refused to yield. In the 90th minute, a desperate long ball into the Rayo box wasn’t cleared properly. The ball fell to veteran Uruguayan Cristhian Stuani, who composed himself and fired past the Rayo keeper to make it 1-1.

The drama didn’t end there. Stuani’s celebration earned him a yellow card in the 90+5th minute, one of only two bookings in a match that was surprisingly clean given the late tension (Rayo also received one yellow). The referee added 6 minutes of stoppage time, but neither side could find a winner.

What the Result Means

For Rayo Vallecano, the draw feels like two points dropped. Dominating large swathes of the game and taking the lead so late, only to be pegged back by a 90th-minute equalizer, will sting. Their inability to convert 10 created chances into more than one goal remains a concern.

For Girona, the point is a testament to their resilience. Despite being outplayed for much of the contest and attempting only 266 passes to Rayo’s 417, they showed the composure and cutting edge required in the dying moments. Stuani once again proved why he remains one of La Liga’s most reliable supersubs.

Final Thoughts

The match at Vallecas was a classic tale of dominance versus efficiency. Rayo will rue their wastefulness, while Girona will celebrate a hard-fought point on the road. With the season entering its final stretch, both teams will need to sharpen their respective strengths Vallecano’s creativity and Girona’s clutch finishing if they are to achieve their remaining objectives.
